In his book, ‘De architectura’, Vitruvius states that a good building should satisfy the three principles of: –

‘Firmitatis, Utilitatis and Venustatis’, roughly translated as: –
Durability - it should stand up robustly and remain in good condition.
Utility - it should be useful and function well for the people using it.

Beauty - it should delight people and raise their spirits.
From this commentary it can be seen that the architect’s service can be defined as ‘seeking to achieve
a balance in the designed and documented solution to the client’s expressed need’. Importantly, as
expressed in the third criteria above, is to achieve solutions that delight people and raise their spirits.
